Strategies to Help You Become a Culturally Responsive Teacher

In a culturally responsive teaching and learning environment, a teacher is expected to know the cultural background of his or her students.  Culturally responsive learning does not only involve knowing the culture of the students.  Teachers have to adopt cultural responsive teaching since their students have different cultural background. Understanding the cultural background of different students helps a teacher know how to best deal with different students. There are several points on how to become a culturally responsive teacher.

Make sure that you know all the students in your class. You should understand more about their academic strengths and weaknesses, how they relate to other people and their emotional behaviors.  It is important to know their cultural backgrounds and how their families are. You can also know what they are always interested in.  Another way of knowing more about them can be through visiting them at their homes.  As the students celebrate their families and cultures; you will have the opportunity to understand the cultures in a deeper manner. Let the students tell you more about how they choose to present themselves to others.  Give them the best ways of presenting themselves without going against the requirements of their cultures.

Do not make a judgment when teaching your students.  You should offer a platform where students feel comfortable when asking questions.  A student should have nothing against another student's culture.  Moreover, it is your responsibility as a Otus teacher to help the students know the importance of respecting each other's differences.  Teach them to master the skill of critical thinking.  Some students prefer to keep their issues to themselves; you should teach them the importance of sharing their problems.

You can create a culturally responsive learning environment by having great academic standard and expectations for all the students. Students tend to perform better when they receive some encouragement from their teacher. Remind them of how much you believe in them and this can be a great way to keep you happy. Your lessons should be in a way that every student fits in. Always be who you are; be human, honest, and caring to the students. Get more info here!

Your culture plays an important role when it comes to a culturally responsive teaching environment.  If your culture is different from that of the students, it is important to know the different ways of handling the attitudes that may arise in class.  Some family's cultures stress on different learning methods and you should take note of that.  Being in a position to respect the culture of a certain family means that you can have a strong relationship with them.
